The immune system is one of the most complex systems in the human body; an intelligent and dynamic network of cells, tissues and organs that work together to defend the human body against foreign invaders such as bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi. The immune system can be easily separated into two parts: innate & acquired immunity. Innate immunity is what we are born with - an in-built set of strategies for recognising and fighting off foreign invaders. Acquired immunity is the part of our immune system that develops over time, whereby the immune system learns new strategies to deal with pathogens. These strategies include the production of antibodies, which may take years to develop but are a highly effective part of its defense. Central to an optimally functioning immune system is the ability to distinguish between own ‘self’ cells and foreign ‘non-self’ cells.
