Vitamin D Technical Review
Vitamin D deficiency is a very common and widespread problem in the United Kingdom with important health consequences. The major reason for deficiency is lack of sunlight exposure. Identification of vitamin D deficiency requires a blood test, however suspicions based on risk factors for deficiency are likely to be correct and enough to warrant treatment. Treatment requires supplemental vitamin D as adequate sunlight exposure is unrealistic for most people and dietary sources are not practical to maintain optimal blood vitamin D levels. Several studies indicate that treatment of vitamin D deficiency has important health benefits.
