L-theanine, is a naturally occurring amino acid found in the tea plant (Camella sinensis), which is known to have relaxing properties, achieved through enhanced alpha brain wave activity and increased synthesis of GABA. Increased GABA, in turn, increases brain levels of dopamine and serotonin, resulting in general feelings of calm and well-being.² L-theanine is rapidly absorbed into the blood stream after digestion where it reaches maximal concentration within 30 minutes to 2 hours and can cross the blood brain barrier for transport directly to the brain.³ L-theanine typically begins to show its calming effects within 30-40 minutes after ingestion, and lasts 8-10 hours.²
