Iodine

Iodine is an essential mineral needed for the production of thyroid hormones. It is a trace element that is found in high amounts in sea vegetables such as kelp and in small amounts in cranberries, potatoes, some fish, eggs and milk.

Iodine contributes to numerous biological functions in the body including normal cognitive function, normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal functioning of the nervous system and production of thyroid hormones and normal thyroid function. Iodine is particularly important for pregnant and breast feeding women.

The thyroid gland is responsible for a range of important functions in our body, controlling our metabolism, growth and development. It produces several important hormones including thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) both of which are made up of molecules of tyrosine and iodine.
