Nutri Advanced & Sustainability

Sustainability is more than just using glass instead of plastic. It’s a journey. Here at Nutri Advanced we are always looking for ways to be kinder to our environment, at every stage from production to delivery. Read on to find out more about our sustainability efforts, and the reasons behind them…

Why Glass Bottles Are Not Necessarily The Answer

We have seriously considered glass as an alternative to our plastic bottles, but it’s not necessarily the most sustainable answer, as although glass can be recycled an infinite number of times (unlike plastic), it requires a high amount of energy to produce and recycle. For our customers, there is a higher chance of breakages which actually doubles the environmental impact of that package, as well as an increased postage cost. Preventing damage is often the most sustainable thing a manufacturer can do when shipping its products.

Different types of plastic have different environment impacts. Our pots are HDPE, and at the moment it’s not possible to source pots for our products made from fully recyclable HDPE. Bio-based plastics like bio-based sugar cane are an interesting alternative, but may come at a cost, with issues linked to deforestation and carbon emissions. Some options, like PLA (polyactic acid) are bioplastics that are also compostable, but actually cannot be composted at home, so are often recycled instead. We are busy reviewing as many options as possible with the aim of finding the best option for our planet, as well as for our products.

Is rPET Plastic the Future?

rPET (recycled plastic) is an interesting option to explore, as it’s made from between 30% and 100% recycled materials, and can itself be recycled again. It’s lightweight, and will protect our products well. Clear rPET is the most sustainable option, as it can be used in closed loop recycling, where the pots are recycled for use as jars again. However, as exposure to light can affect our supplements, it’s likely that amber or white coloured rPET provides the best option for our products.

Recycling Our HDPE Plastic Pots

Recycling our HDPE pots couldn’t be simpler. The labels are easy-peel, and then the pots can be recycled with your normal recycling bins. They are also lightweight which means that less fuel is needed to ship them, and non-fragile so no breakages.

In It For the Long Haul…

It’s not just about pots and labels, at Nutri Advanced, we’re in it for the long-haul when it comes to taking good care of the place we all call home. Below are just some of the long-term improvements to our practices that we are committed to carrying out:

Converting Our Cardboard

We make good use of any cardboard that comes in to our warehouse. Using our special shredder, we’re able to create eco-friendly packing materials from the shredded cardboard to use in our parcels to prevent any breakages. It’s lightweight so it saves on fuel costs, and as well as being made from recycled materials, it’s fully recyclable itself.

Switching Plastic Tape For 100% Recyclable Paper

We’ve switched our old plastic tape for a new 100% recyclable paper tape. It sticks to the boxes through water so no need for any plastic glue. This means there’s no need to remove the plastic tape before you can recycle our parcels, making it even easier to recycle.

Plastic-Free Alternative Packaging & 100% Recyclable Waste Shrink Wrap

We’re now converting our waste shrink wrap into bales, in-house, which will be sent to a plant where they will be 100% ethically recycled with zero going to landfill. Wherever possible, these materials remain within the UK and Europe to reduce the carbon footprint too. We’ve stopped using bubble-wrap to protect glass products in orders, and are now using plastic-free alternatives instead.

Hybrid Working & Cycle To Work Scheme

We’re currently trialling a hybrid working from home/office arrangement, meaning less fuel emissions from commuting. We also offer a cycle to work scheme where our team can get a tax free voucher to spend on cycling equipment, and we’ve got charging ports for electric cars in the car park.

Recycling Bins in Every Office

A small effort can make a huge difference, which is why we now have recycling bins in all of our offices. Common office waste items such as bottles, cans, paper, and cardboard are all easy to recycle so the whole team is helping to reduce our environmental impact.
